Essential conditions for applying to prestigious universities in Canada

Canada has a complete education system and first-class universities. Compared with other countries, it also has a friendly policy for international students. Therefore, Canada is also attracting more and more international students. What conditions do you need to meet if you want to apply to a Canadian university?

Most Canadian universities have an academic year system. For universities with an academic year system, you can apply for the start of school in September of the following year starting from October of each year. The deadline for online applications is generally between January and March of the following year, and the deadline for document submission is generally between April and May of the following year.

The university begins processing application documents in March every year, usually following the principle of “first come, first reviewed”. The earlier you submit your complete application documents, the sooner you will receive admission information.

What are the requirements for applying to prestigious Canadian universities?

1. Academic achievements

Most Canadian universities recognize Chinese academic records, such as high school grades, final exam scores, and college entrance exam scores.

If you are currently studying at a university, you need to provide your university grades. For prestigious universities, it is necessary to have a score of 85 or above in the three years of high school. Different majors have different score requirements, such as business or engineering majors can even reach 90 or above.

For master’s degree applications, some Canadian universities pay more attention to the school background. UBC clearly states on its official website that the GPA for 211 universities is 80, and the GPA for non-211 universities is 85. But for example, the University of Toronto only requires a GPA of 80 or above.

However, it is recommended that if your undergraduate degree is not from a 985 or 211 university, a GPA of 85 or above will be more competitive.

2. Language scores

Canadian universities have clear requirements for IELTS or TOEFL scores.

For example, the University of Toronto requires IELTS 6.5, with no single subject lower than 6. No matter how high the total score is, if the sub-scores do not meet the requirements, the school will regard it as not meeting the school’s language requirements.

However, if the total score is exactly 6.5 and the sub-score is not less than 6, the language requirements of the university can be met.

3. GRE or GAMT

Canadian universities also require GRE and GMAT exams for master’s degree applications.

Of course, this is not necessary. It depends on what kind of course you are applying for. Some courses will require submission of these two test scores. Generally, business schools require submission of GMAT test scores.
